'Some big boots to fill' | San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo to host first official Cowboy Breakfast in 2024

“The event will keep with the tradition of free breakfast items, coffee, & fun events for all those that attend”, said rodeo officials.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo released statement announcing that the event will host the official rodeo season Cowboy Breakfast starting January 26, 2024.

“We are very excited to now activate the official rodeo Cowboy Breakfast to start the celebration of our 75th Anniversary season of the Stock Show & Rodeo”, said Chris Derby, San Antonio Rodeo Chief Marketing Officer. “The event will keep with the tradition of free breakfast items, coffee, & fun events for all those that attend”, said Derby.

The Cowboy Breakfast Foundation has put on the event since 1976 and has helped raise funds for the St. Philips College Scholarships, especially the Hospitality Department. While volunteers of the rodeo will work with the foundation this first year to continue the tradition, their previous version of the event is coming to an end.

Vice Chairman for the The Cowboy Breakfast Foundation Chuck Christian said the memories that have been made at the annual event will live with residents and visitors forever.

"Having families two and three generations coming in from out of town, standing in line at 3[a.m.]," he said. "Freezing rain, 20 mile an hour winds and just having the best time of their lives."

Combining comradery and good times wasn’t enough to offset costs. Christian says for a decade the event had everything donated.

“The cost of everything has skyrocketed of course.”

For nearly 50 years, Christian says the event had a great run and large impact on not only San Antonio, but also other surrounding communities.

“Being a 100% free event and 100% volunteer-driven, it’s a unique combination," he said. "We’re just thrilled to death to being a part of the Cowboy Breakfast and brought this to San Antonio. There’s been a lot of spinoffs. They have some big boots to fill from us."

The foundation has raised more than $250,000 in scholarships over the years.

The new version of the event hosted by the rodeo will now be the official kickoff to the rodeo season.

The breakfast will take place at 142 Gembler Road and it will kick off the BBQ Kickoff that will take place that same weekend.

The rodeo will be held on Feb. 8-25 at the Frost Bank Center/Freeman Coliseum fairgrounds.
