GATESVILLE, Texas — A re-groundbreaking will take place Tuesday at the site of the explosion that destroyed a section of Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, according to a press release from Coryell Health.
The blast on June 26, 2018 killed three people and injured 15 others.
An investigation by State Fire Marshals determined the explosion happened after valves to water heaters were left open, allowing a large amount of natural gas, supplied by Atmos Energy, to collect in a mechanical room.
The $42-million renovation and expansion project will cover 117,000 square feet throughout the health system campus, the press release said.
"We are pleased to welcome Skiles Group, as our new construction partner, to our Coryell Health family and the Gatesville community," said the CEO for Coryell Health David Byrom. "The firm will lead supplementation efforts to mobilize and complete our expansion and renovation work."
Skiles Group, a Dallas based firm, replaces Waco based Lochridge-Priest.
The project will include a 25-bed two story hospital, a 16-bed medical therapy wing, two operating rooms and other upgrades to the facility, according to the press release.
Senior Vice President for Skiles Group Michael Blakemore said “We’re honored to help Coryell Health introduce these facilities to the community and complete the vision. Our safety-first mindset and Lean construction practices will serve as a fitting partner to open phases efficiently and effectively.”
The press release said the re-ground breaking was scheduled for Noon followed by a reception inside the EMS building across the street.
The first anticipated grand opening will be the cafeteria and dining facility, which is expected to open in May, according to the press release.
