KILLEEN, Texas — The City of Killeen wants to help the public beat the heat by opening up a cooling center throughout the hot months.
The city said it's partnering with Friends in Crisis Shelter, which is located at 412 E. Sprott St. The shelter is expected to be open any day the mid-day temperatures are forecasted to exceed 100 degrees.
On those days, the shelter will open at 1 p.m. and stay open overnight. It'll provide Killeen residents a place where there's air conditioning, water and a meal to anyone who may need it.
The city said its city buildings are also open for cooling off from the heat, but only during normal business hours. Those buildings include, but isn't limited to:
- City Hall
- Family Recreation Center
- North Precinct Police Department
- Police Headquarters
If you'd like to donate water, you can drop it off at any Killeen Fire Station of the North Precinct Police Station, 402 N. 2nd St.
For non-water donations, please call the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management at (254) 501-7706 to see what is needed.
