City of Killeen officially takes over daily operations for Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery

“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to honor our courageous fallen heroes in this manner,” said City of Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash-King.

KILLEEN, Texas — On Monday, it was announced that the City of Killeen had officially taken over daily operations of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.

While the Veterans Land Board (VLB) still has ownership over the cemetery, they will provide the city with funding for operations, including employee salaries, benefits, and daily operating supplies. The VLB says that they were able to save 30% compared to employing temporary staff at the cemetery.

"It is an honor for the VLB to work with the City of Killeen as we continue the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery's legacy of impeccable service to Veterans and their families during some of the most difficult times of their lives," said Commissioner and Veterans Land Board Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham. "Together, we will create an even better future for the invaluable staff at the cemetery, our Veterans and their families for generations to come."

The VLB has similar agreements with their locations in Mission, Corpus Christi, and Abilene. They also plan to have an interlocal agreement with their Lubbock location once the cemetery in the area opens.

“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to honor our courageous fallen heroes in this manner,” said City of Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash-King. “For our city to be a part of this legacy and living tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, is a profound showing of respect and gratitude.”
