'Big Boy' locomotive coming to Central Texas

The largest locomotive in the world, and the last of its kind still running built in World War II, will be making a pit stop in Central Texas.

MEXIA, Texas — The largest steam locomotive in the world, "Big Boy No. 4014", is headed to Central Texas in September, according to Union Pacific

During the train's 2024 Heartland of America Tour, it will roll through Central Texas on the following days:

  • Sept. 19 – Mexia
  • Oct. 4 – Navasota and Hempstead
  • Oct. 7 – Spring and Navasota
  • Oct. 8 - Bryan
  • Oct. 9 – Marlin and West

Big Boy No. 4014 is the last in operation out of 25 Big Boys built during World War II. Eight are still in existence.

Sixteen drivers are needed to drive a Big Boy down the track. The train weighs over a million pounds, and is 132 ft long, about a third of the length of a football field. One of the decommissioned Big Boys, No. 4018, is on display in Frisco, at the Museum of the American Railroad.
