TEMPLE, Texas — Christmas isn't just another day at Country Lane, a 55-and-over community. It's a moment of pure magic, carefully crafted by a dedicated staff who understand that sometimes, a single gift can mean everything.
Jose Lugo, the community manager, has been orchestrating this holiday tradition.
"Seniors usually get forgotten. They get put aside. They get marginalized sometimes," Lugo explains.
With 75 gifts still needed, the community hopes Temple residents can help.
"Most of our residents don't have relatives that live in Temple," Lugo says. "This will probably be their only gift this Christmas."
The drive isn't about expensive presents. Instead, it's about thoughtful, meaningful gifts that bring joy and practical comfort to seniors. This year's wish list includes unique items like:
- Boot trays to keep porches clean
- Handmade scarves
- Diamond art kits
- Practical, gender-neutral gifts
Lugo describes the gift-giving moment as genuinely magical.
"It's like watching a kid on Christmas morning," he says. "You become a kid again when you're a senior – seeing their expressions of pure joy is amazing."
The community is inviting Central Texas residents to get involved in multiple ways:
- Donate gifts (valued around $25)
- Attend the Christmas party on Dec. 6
- Spend time with residents
- Make a monetary contribution
Despite challenges – including a tornado and hailstorm that hit the area earlier this year – the community remains hopeful. Local businesses and organizations have already stepped up, but more support is needed.
"We want to give back to those who have given so much to us," Lugo says.
