Central Texas comes together for Troy ISD student in his fight against leukemia

Central Texas is rallying around a Troy ISD eighth-grader battling leukemia with a silent auction event on Nov. 16.

TROY, Texas — Family and friends are coming together to support a young Troy ISD student in his fight against leukemia.

The Silent Auction and Fundraiser will take place on Nov. 16 to raise money for Troy ISD eighth-grader Joshua Mooney and his family as he continues his fight against leukemia.

Joshua Mooney went to the doctor for a routine check up on Sept. 26. The doctors immediately sent him to the emergency room, and he was shortly diagnosed with leukemia.

Mooney was released by the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on Oct.1, five days after the initial doctor appointment.

“Check-ups matter," Diane Mooney, Joshua's mother, said. "Get your kids the check-up [because] incidental findings happen all the time. Check-ups matter."

Diane Mooney, is an aide at Raymond Mays Middle School. She took a leave of absence to be at her son’s side, taking him to the doctor for various procedures throughout October.

“Everything’s flipped upside down. I’m on [Family and Medical Leave] so I’m not working, at least for the time being,” Diane Mooney said.

When family friend Melissa Getz heard what happened, she felt called to help.

“I was praying and I said 'I need help. I need help,'" Getz said. "I can't, everybody does t-shirts, everybody does, you know, all the simple little things, I need something. By the end of church, I was like, 'I'm doing a silent auction' and that was I, I have to help because she is very well known with all the kids at the middle school and she's so caring and loving and her kids are so sweet and they're polite and they're nice."

The Silent Auction and Fundraiser takes place on Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Troy First Assembly of God Church on 722 Main Street.

Despite the heavy toll, Joshua Mooney remains determined to fully recover.

“I’ll make it through, I’ll keep pushing,” Joshua Mooney stated.

Anyone interested in making donations can contact Melissa Getz at 254-781-6226.
