FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — United States Army Col. Lakicia Stokes has been in the army for 30 years and has held many leadership positions. But the role of Garrison Commander is a challenging role that requires leadership, organizational skills and adaptability.
"As Garrison Commander I am responsible for sustaining, supporting, and defending the installation, Stokes said.
In July of 2023 Stokes became the first African American woman Garrison Commander on Fort Cavazos. When she found out she made history on post, she didn't let it go to her head.
"I am a humble person. I think it is from my background and how my mom raised me,” Stokes said. "Of course, it is important, and I understand the duties and responsibilities I have here."
From overseeing the day to day operations of the Garrison, to managing the welfare and readiness of soldiers, Stokes has a lot on her plate.
She allowed 6 News Anchor Jasmin Caldwell to follow her for a day to get a glimpse of her busy schedule. First stop was at the Fort Cavazos Directorate of Emergency Services then to Heritage Heights where more than 50 new homes been built.
"When the junior enlisted come home from work they have a nice place to come to. It’s that home feeling where you can just relax," she said.
The demanding position of an army leader requires a high level of dedication and resilience.
While Stokes is the first black woman Garrison Commander on post, she is the second woman.
"We've changed certain positions that used to not be for females," she said. "The army has improved and has now looked at females in those major positions, which is great for the army."
Aside from military life, Stokes is a mom and a wife who enjoys spending time with family.
"Going to the basketball games, swim practice, strength training and doing all those different sporting events on the weekend," she said. "That’s what I enjoy doing. Just spending time with my family."
Stokes said her best advice for soldiers hoping to be in a leadership role is to have a positive attitude and work hard every single day, because anything is possible.
