Black Fathers' Waco holding annual father-daughter dance

The group 'Black Fathers' Waco' will host annual dance on February 9, 2024.

WACO, Texas — A group in Waco is working to bring together Black fathers from across Central Texas. The group provides encouragement, parenting ideas and events for the dads.

“We want to restore the image of what black fatherhood is," said Black Fathers' Waco co-founder Drexel King.

King says that often times, Black fathers get a bad stereotype for not actively being in their child's life and the group aims to change that. The group was formed in 2020, months after George Floyd’s death.

"I saw that murder, when he shouts out for his mother, I thought to myself like raising Black children in this in this world is different," King said.

Ultimately, the events that took place in 2020 inspired King to take the initiative in his own community.

“We wanted to provide a support system for Black fathers. So that we can inspire fathers inspire other children, we wanted to be unashamedly Black,” King said.

The group hosts several meet ups and event throughout the year, helping each other become better parents and creating a sense of community.

“When you're in the thick of it, you're like, 'I'm tired of terrible twos. I'm tired of changing diapers. I'm tired of it.' But I think having this community is really beneficial,” said Darius Brown, co-founder of Black Fathers' Waco.

"We're just hearing different parenting styles, and just helping one another through those journeys," said King.

The group also uses social media platforms like Instagram to help connect with dads and share tips, encouragement and more.

On Friday, Feb. 9, Black Fathers' Waco will host its biggest event, its annual father-daughter dance from 6-8 p.m. at 208 Chama Drive Hewitt, TX 76643.

“That’s probably my most impactful event because I’ve seen dad‘s crying, daughters crying," said Brown.

All dads are welcomed to attend the event. There will be music, giveaways, photos and refreshments.
