Belton ISD approves new district lines, reviews safety measures

The board approved new school attendance boundaries in a 6 to 1 vote.

BELTON, Texas — The Belton Independent School District school board approved new school attendance boundaries in a 6 to 1 vote Monday night.

The new lines will determine which schools kids will attend in the district, and takes into account the new Charter Oak Elementary School, which is the first school from the 2017 bond election.

Dr. Kincannon also reviewed new security terminologies and definitions the district put into place this month, called standard response protocol from the "I Love U Guys" Foundation.

"This month we transitioned to a new standard response protocol, which is the language in which we'll respond to emergencies on our campuses," Kincannon said. "Previously we had emergency flip charts telling our staff what to do."

Here are some of the new definitions the district now uses:

  • Lockout: Similar to soft lockdown. Everyone goes inside, business as usual, remain alert.
  • Lockdown: A hard lockdown. Stay out of sight, lock all doors, turn off lights, remain silent.
  • Shelter: Hazard and safety strategy. Move to shelter area for tornado, hazmat and applicable situations.
  • Hold: In classrooms, clear the halls. Remain in classroom until "all clear" is given.
  • Evacuate: Students leave belongings behind and follow instructions, go to the announced location. Teachers lead the evacuation to the location, bring medications if needed and take attendance.

The Texas School Safety Center endorsed the safety measures, and Belton ISD is the first school district in the KCEN Channel 6 viewing area to implement the system developed by the "I Love U Guys" Foundation.
