BELTON, Texas — Belton ISD second grade teacher Heather Crossley is on her way to becoming America's Favorite Teacher, but she needs your help!

The contest, which was made to celebrate teachers, will gift one educator with $25,000, a trip to Hawaii and a spotlight in Reader's Digest magazine.

Heather has been teaching at Belton ISD for the past two years. Prior to that, she taught for one year at Bastrop ISD and spent 17 years teaching in Oregon.

"Ever since I was little I wanted to be a teacher. It was just something I always felt like was my passion and my purpose in life," Heather stated when asked about why she became a teacher.

Heather also credits an art teacher she had in middle school to her desire to become an educator.

"[Heather's teacher] was just super patient. A lot of what I aspire to be, she got to know every kid. It inspired me to want to go out and make a difference and give back and to also just be a life-long learner myself," Heather explained.

When asked about the type of impact she wants to have on her students, Heather explained that she just wants each of them to reach their full potential and to become a good person.

"You can do anything you want to do if you just put your mind to it and put the effort in you can achieve your dreams. Dream big and achieve big," Heather stated.

Heather says if she wins the contest she will use the money to do some home improvements, take a trip with her family and put the rest in savings.

Currently, Heather is sitting at fifth place in her group and only the top five will move on to the next round of voting. Voting for this round is set to close at 9 p.m. CT.
