TEMPLE, Texas — A Temple mom and her two-year-old daughter are recovering after the roof and ceiling of their apartment caved in... while they were inside.
It happened Aug. 27 at the Asbury Park Apartments in Temple. Sherion Davis said it happened fast and was terrifying.
"My two-year-old daughter was sitting in her high chair, she was eating," Davis explained. "It just happened so fast, I wasn't able to grab her, run out. I didn't even think that was going to collapse. It just happened so fast. We were terrified, especially my two-year-old daughter. She basically screamed and hollered maybe an hour and a half, two hours after the incident."
Davis had to take her daughter to the hospital to get checked out. She is thankful her daughter is alive and only sustained a bruised leg. Davis said her back is bruised from the incident, too.
"We're blessed to be alive, we're best blessed to be here," Davis added.
Davis is feeling frustrated and confused on how and why the roof and ceiling caved in because she had just dealt with a similar situation shortly before Aug. 27.
"What's so crazy is a week before that, my bedroom had already collapsed in, but it wasn't the whole bedroom," Davis said. "I contacted my leasing manager, she got the workers back out there and they were pretty quick. They fixed it in about three or four hours. I thought everything was ok. I thought I wasn't going to have any more problems and then Aug. 27 comes and the whole bedroom caved in, and then the whole living room caved in. This time me and my daughter are injured because we were there."
The Aug. 27 collapse left Davis' apartment destroyed. Photos and videos from Davis show insulation covering her belongings and her unit being exposed to the outside elements. There was also a tarp seen in some of the footage.
6 News drove by the apartment complex and saw many tarps still remain across the roof. There were also many windows boarded up. Davis told 6 News the repairs to the roof were underway from the damage sustained from the May 22 storms.
Davis is also shocked the apartment isn't helping her with any accommodations except offering her another unit at the same complex.
"I don't want another unit," Davis said. "Why would I want to stay there when the whole apartment complex is in the same condition... You couldn't even secure my safety in the one that I'm actually paying rent for. I'm not putting my daughter back in harm's way. I'm not doing that."
Davis said she didn't have renter's insurance and she advises other renters to ensure they have it and also to document everything. She told 6 News she has decided to take legal action.
"This negligence is on their hands and thank God that we were able to get out," Davis added. "I'm not going to say not harmed because we were harmed, but it could have been worse. The fact that it could have been worse and y'all don't even want to accommodate me. I decided to take legal action, so my lawyer is going to take it for me, there's nothing for me to communicate with them about anymore."
6 News reached out to the property management team who owns the apartment but we have yet to hear back.
Loved ones of Davis have created a GoFundMe to help her rebuild, restore belongings that were lost and to help with accommodations as she is still without a place to call home.
