Buzzworthy | Melanin Memoirs promotes Black culture through customized art

Melanin Memoirs has been open since August 2024 and sells customized journals, coffee mugs and more.

KILLEEN, Texas — Brittany Gibson is an active duty solider in the United States Army and served at the Fort Cavazos Army base for over 14 years. While being a mother and being active duty, she still wanted to take a swing at being an entrepreneur.

"It's like one of those things where you have so many ideas, so I really just jumped into it," Gibson explained.

As a Black woman, Gibson has always been into Black art and culture. So, in August, she decided to create her own business named 'Melanin Memoirs'.

Gibson sells melanin inspired journals that come with their own coffee cups, customized t-shirt, gift sets and more.

"I really want them to understand that they're getting a really good product that I really put a lot of time and effort into, like literally every single journal I make," Gibson explained.

Gibson encourages people to write down their thoughts and what they're feeling because like many, it has helped her through her mental health.

"If it's yourself, it's yourself," Gibson told 6 News. "If you wanna talk to the God, then talk to him and then you just kind of write it down and you're just relaxing and you're just journaling."

Most importantly, Gibson wants the world to know that being Black does not look like one thing and Black people come in all different shades and colors.

"I want the world to understand that there's still beauty in our color," Gibson added. "We're beautiful. We're not dangerous. We're not violent just because we're a certain shade."

Gibson donates some of her proceeds to special causes in the community.

To meet Gibson in person, she will be at the Fort Cavazos Spouses Club Holiday Fundraiser with her products Nov. 9 and 10 at the Killeen Civic Center.
