Killeen ISD student faces felony charge for secretly videoing another student using restroom

A Killeen mother said she was furious after a secretly recorded video of her son using a restroom at Palo Alto Middle School was posted to Instagram.

KILLEEN, Texas — Valeita Lucas, a mother in Killeen, said she was furious after a secretly recorded video of her son using a restroom at Palo Alto Middle School surfaced on social media earlier this month.

In a police report, Lucas' son Dezmond said he was using a stall and looked up after he had finished when he saw a phone. By the time he left the stall, the person with the phone was gone.

A few days later, a friend showed Dezmond the video that had been posted to Instagram.

"My son was cyberbullied," Lucas said. "He was violated. I want my son to be able to get up in the morning, get out of my car and be comfortable at school. I want him to be able to get up and be able to go in school and learn."

Killeen Independent School District spokesperson Terry Abbott said the district filed charges Thursday against the student who recorded Dezmond.

The student who recorded Dezmond is facing a charge of improper photograph and visual recording, a state felony.

KISD also released a statement outlining the consequences these actions can have.

"Any student who unlawfully takes pictures or video of another student will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," the statement read. "Students need to understand that such behavior is a felony offense. We will not tolerate it."

Lucas said the incident scarred her son. She said she hopes this story will encourage parents to be more aware of what is happening with their children.
