ALVORD, Texas — The driver and four passengers who died in a rollover crash in Wise County Wednesday have been identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
According to Texas DPS, the driver, who died at the scene, was 46-year-old Diony Antoine. The passengers who died at the scene were 42-year-old JN Irard Vixamar and 36-year-old Ledene Pierre-Louis. DPS said a third passenger, 28-year-old Geneve Louis, died after being taken to Medical City Denton. Another passenger, 35-year-old Junior Louis, died on Aug. 30 at Medical City Denton.
Nine others were taken to the hospital; seven with serious injuries, one with critical injuries and one with minor injuries.
According to Texas DPS, all victims were from Florida and of Haitian descent.
The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday at U.S. Highway 287 and FM 1655. According to Wise County officials, a 15-person passenger van occupied by 14 people seemingly rolled over multiple times. According to the initial 911 call, several people were ejected from the van.
All of the 14 involved are adults, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger called the crash a "mass casualty incident" when reached by email.
Troopers say a preliminary investigation determined a Chevrolet Express van was traveling northbound when the driver veered off the left side of the roadway, overcorrected, lost control, and rolled.
Three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene (including the driver), three passengers were transported to different hospitals by air with critical injuries, seven passengers were transported by ambulance with non-critical injuries, and one passenger was transported by ambulance with a minor injury, according to a DPS press release.
Preuninger said in a press release that three Wise County ambulances and three medical helicopters (one PHI and two Air Evac LifeTeam) transported patients from the scene. Bowie EMS also sent an ambulance to the scene for support.
Texas DPS is investigating the accident.
In an update from Texas DPS Wednesday morning, a spokesperson said only one person in the van was wearing a seat belt, and that person survived the crash.
