2 killed in rollover crash after driver runs stop sign near Axtell, officials says

Investigators said a GMC SUV was traveling south on FM 2311 when the driver ran a stop sign and hit a Hyundai.

AXTELL, Texas — Two people were killed Saturday in a rollover crash near Axtell, investigators said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the victims Monday as Belinda Sanabria, 55, of San Antonio and Matias Sanabria Mendoza, 50, also of San Antonio.

DPS Troopers were called around 3 a.m. to SH 31 at FM 2311, northeast of Axtell for a two-vehicle crash.

Investigators said a GMC SUV was traveling south on FM 2311 when the driver ran a stop sign and hit a Hyundai. The crash caused the Hyundai to flip several times, according to officials.

Sanabria and Mendoza were in the Hyundai and died at the scene, officials said.

The passenger of the GMC was taken to Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Waco with “incapacitating injury,” investigators said.

The driver of the GMC was also taken to Baylor Scott and White in Waco to be treated for a possible injury.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are possible, officials said.
