6 Fix | Moody family to get electricity restored after losing home in tornado

After losing their home in a tornado, a Moody family found a new one but struggled to get electricity set up. 6 News got to the bottom of what went wrong.

MOODY, Texas — A family in Moody had been without power for months after losing their home in a micro-burst tornado.

The homeowner told 6 News they found a new home but waited weeks to get electricity established.

The family, which did not want to be identified, said they paid thousands of dollars to the Heart of Texas Electric Co-op and weeks later they still had no power.

"We're using generators and space heaters to keep warm right now," the homeowner said.

6 News tried multiple times to contact the co-op before the story first aired Monday morning on Texas Today. Later that day, we heard from the co-op General Manager, Brandon Young.

Young said they had planned to install electricity before the story aired. In fact, he said it would be installed on Thursday.

"We always work diligently to care for our members, but numerous steps must be completed before the construction commences, Brandon Young, General Manager for the co-op," told 6 News in a statement.

Young also gave 6 News a timeline of the co-op's interaction with the family.

11/1 - Existing member completed a new construction application

11/2 - Staking Technician staked the job. There was not a mobile home at the location, or pad at this time. (The mobile home was not delivered until 11/18.)

11/3 - Staking Technician sent the invoices for both the construction and meter loop.

11/15 - Member paid construction and meter loop invoice. The member provided two right-of-way easements.

11/20 – Underground locates were completed.

11/20 – The job was released to the construction crew and added to the job queue.

"We also have other members in the queue for construction, and we work on a first-come, first-served basis," Young's statement reads. "HOTEC does not charge fees or offer in any way for members to pay additional costs to expedite the construction of their job."

The homeowner told 6 News they never got a firm date for the installation. 6 News will follow up to see if it's been installed on Thursday.
