Historic church in Mooreville destroyed in late-night blaze

No injuries were reported but the building is a total loss, according to officials. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

CHILTON, Texas — Multiple fire departments responded to a fire at the Mooreville United Methodist Church Thursday.

Officials said the fire stared around 10:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported, but all that remained of the 151-year-old building was rubble, its historic marker and an angel in the entry way.

The church had been under the leadership of Senior Pastor Dennis Rajeck for a little more than a year.

"The doorbell rang and they said, 'The church is on fire,'" Rajeck said. "I jumped in the truck and grabbed the warmest clothes I could find."

Crews with the Bruceville-Eddy Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department said they were sorry for the loss of the church.

"Our hearts go out to the congregation and community following the loss of their historic sanctuary," the fire department posted on its Facebook page.

Even though the sanctuary was a total loss, more than 200 members of the church will still be able to have their service Sunday in the fellowship hall thanks to the efforts of first responders.

"It was amazing what [the fire departments] did to save our fellowship hall," Rajeck said. "We still have a place to worship Sunday because of those fire departments."

Church historian Anne Phelps said the focus now is on starting over.

"We need all the love and support and prayers that can be offered to us," Phelps said. "It is a tragic loss."

Rajeck said despite the loss, the church still managed to deliver its weekly Meals on Wheels to senior citizens Friday.

Organizers have set up a fund for anyone willing to donate to the church

Donations can also be made at any Bancorp South location or mailed to the Mooreville United Methodist Church Fire Relief Fund at P.O. box 808 in Marlin, 76661.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
