GROESBECK, Texas — For the first time, Limestone County and Freestone County residents are invited to join the fight against Alzheimer's Disease by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's on June 22, at the Limestone County Medical Center in Groesbeck.
“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said Brenda Shuttlesworth, Executive Director for the North Central Texas Chapter.
“We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”
The Bi-Stone County Walk to End Alzheimer's will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the opening ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m.
For Mexia resident Valarie Friday, she'll be thinking of her Mom, Robilyn every step of the way.
"I just messaged some people and said this is happening. Let's go support RoRo. They decided to name our group Team RoRo," said Friday.
RoRo, as her family calls her, has been there for her daughter Valarie for all of life's precious moments.
They have a big family with a big heart but soon an Alzheimer's diagnosis caught them all by surprise.
"It is very difficult. You go from having your mom who is healthy and working to all of a sudden she can't remember your son," said Friday.
"My Dad has more patience than I could ever imagine. He also definitely holds to the vows 'in sickness and in health.' He loves my mom unconditionally and he is her biggest support. He is by far the most impressive man I've ever met. He helps her do everything. I always tell my kids to marry somebody like that," she said.
Sindra McLean and Kim Sheppard of Accent Care are now part of Valarie's support system.
"When it happens in your backyard you have a sense of need; a sense of community," said McLean.
"That's the whole point is helping our neighbors, helping our communities and showing our small communities that we can do that here. And we can do it better," said McLean.
Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease and it's the leading cause of death.
"It's not easy because it's such a horrible disease, especially for the caregivers. But there is a lot of help out there for caregivers and those with the disease," said Sheppard.
Valarie is getting team shirts printed at Diamonds & Dust in Groesbeck. On the back of the purple shirts will be "Team RoRo." And more than 20 people have joined her team to walk in the event.
"We're thankful for our friends and family who help us out and support and love her regardless," said Friday.
Because no one should walk alone in the fight against Alzheimer's.
