Viral Chase ATM check fraud 'glitch,' one of many illegal and dangerous trends

The viral Chase ATM check fraud "glitch" is the most recent of a string of illegal and dangerous trends to cross the web.

TEMPLE, Texas — A viral internet trend has people thinking they hit the jackpot.

Videos show people at Chase ATMs depositing checks for large sums of money and then making a withdrawal for a smaller, substantial amount before the check bounces, leading them to think they were tricking the system. In reality, they were just committing fraud.

Chase said in a statement that they're aware of and are handling the situation.

This is just one example of the hundreds of "trends" that have come out since the beginning of social media.

This "glitch" shows how influential social media is. With over five billion users, trends seem to pop up every day. Some are harmless, while others can influence people to do illegal or even dangerous acts.

People follow and post these trends looking for views, not knowing they might be putting themselves in danger.

"Someone will do something because everyone else is doing it, and you ask them, 'Well, why did you do it?' And it's almost as if they normalized it. I think that's a huge issue since everyone's doing it," said Woodway Community Resource Officer Griffin Kenneaster. "It's perceived to be normal, and they're not aware they are breaking the law. I think an important note would be educating them on the repercussions and the laws."

The next time you see a new trend pop up, stop and consider what could happen after pressing record.
