Local golf courses reopening with coronavirus precautions in place

As golf courses reopen and people head out to the links, the rounds look a little different.

WACO, Texas — Golf courses in Central Texas are starting to see more traffic as they reopen and the weather warms up.

But rounds of golf look a lot different for the time being, to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Bear Ridge Golf Club in Waco is sanitizing carts twice between uses, instead of the once required by state guidelines.

Owner Tommy Tompkins said the added restriction of one player per golf cart has hindered business.

"We have 60 carts, so if you send all 60 out, that's 120 customers," Tompkins said. "Well, we can't put but one to a cart right now, so that's only 60 customers, it cuts it in half."

But all courses want people to continue practicing social distancing while they play.

Sammons Park Golf Course, a public course in Temple, saw normal weekend numbers as it reopened Friday, even with stricter protocols in place than at Bear Ridge.

Sammons Park's pro shop is closed and access to the inside of the clubhouse is limited.

Bear Ridge recently loosened its clubhouse restrictions from that, but still only allows four people inside at one time.

"We just wait on one customer at a time," Tompkins said.

Some courses are doing even more. City of Temple spokesman Cody Weems said Sammons Park is making changes to the course itself to minimize contact with items and people.

"What they've done is they've raised the cup up a little so that if the ball hits the cup, it's considered that it's gone in," Weems said. "It's just another way to limit items that people are touching."

Meanwhile, Fort Hood officials tell 6 News the course on post is still closed and there is no timeline on when it will reopen.
