TEMPLE, Texas — Temple Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Bobby Ott said Monday he is committed to giving seniors a graduation ceremony.
Ott released a video detailing a plan that provides two different opportunities for a ceremony.
The official graduation, which was scheduled for May 30, will be June 14, Ott said. If social distancing won't allow for a ceremony, the district will host a virtual graduation.
If the graduation is virtual, Ott said the district also booked the Bell County Expo Center for August 8 to host a senior class 2020 celebration.
"If social distancing protocols are relaxed by then we will all come back and not only have a memorable ceremony for you and your loved ones, but I suspect we will be celebrating much more – like the opportunity to be around each other one last time before moving into the next chapter of your lives," Ott said.
Ott also said the prom, which was scheduled for May 23, was rescheduled to June 12 at 8 p.m. at the high school. If social distancing is still necessary, Ott said prom would likely be canceled.
All end of year banquets will take place in May, but will be conducted virtually, Ott said. The details will be communicated through the high school administration, staff and district channels.
Ott said the school's Blue Victory light will be lit every Friday at 8:20 p.m., which is 2020 in military time, to honor the senior class.
"This is another way to honor you, our senior class, with one of our longest running and most recognized traditions across the community," Ott said.
