Bell County officials give COVID-19 update, answer questions

County officials and medical personnel are updating the public on the county's handling of the coronavirus.

BELL COUNTY, Texas — Bell County officials and area medical professionals are providing an update on the county's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Here are the highlights:

  • Bell County Public Health District Director Amanda Robison-Chadwell said there are a total 223 cases, but said that number might change throughout the day May 14.
  • Bell County Judge David Blackburn said the county will have a few more mobile testing sites on May 17 and 18. Details will be released as the dates get closer. 
  • Robison-Chadwell reported that no one who has contacted the health department has tested positive after visiting the Belton Pizza Hut where an employee tested positive for the virus.
  • Dr. Greenberg with Baylor Scott & White - Temple said the hospital has not seen as spike in cases visiting the hospital. The hospital it trying to get back to "business as usual" he said. 
  • A doctor with AdventHealth said "the flattening is there" as the healthcare provider has not seen a spike in cases.
  • AdventHealth is starting a post-coronavirus therapy program to help recovered patients.
  • Robison-Chadwell said the county is still in a place where there could be a spike in cases. 
  • Robison-Chadwell said it's possible to see a resurgence in cases come October.
  • Dr. Greenberg said the development of an effective vaccine will take a while, saying he has seen vaccines be released and then taken off the market.
  • Judge Blackburn said the county is "actively taking steps" to prepare for a resurgence in fall and beyond.
