WACO -- Former Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman was arrested Wednesday afternoon in connection to a sexual assault investigation.
A search warrant was executed at Oakman's apartment on April 3 after a Baylor student told police that Oakman sexually assaulted her when the two went to his apartment after leaving Scruffy Murphy's, a Waco club. Oakman told investigators that they did have sex, but that it was consensual.
Sgt. Patrick Swanton with Waco PD said in a press release that Oakman, 24, met with detectives at the Waco police department at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, in reference to the investigation. He was served with two search warrants; one for his DNA and another for his cellphone.
The search warrant for Oakman's cell phone stated that the victim texted Oakman on April 3 and told him that she was at Scruffy Murphy's with friends. Oakman responded and met the victim at the club. After Waco Police Officers informed Oakman of the sexual assault investigation, he attempted to contact the victim on his cellphone on two separate occasions.
Immediately following the execution of those search warrants, Oakman was served with a warrant for his arrest for sexual assault. He was taken into custody and transported to the McLennan County Jail without incident. His bond has not been set, so he remained jailed Wednesday night.
KCEN spoke to a student who was with a group of people at Oakman's neighbor's house Wednesday night.
"The feeling is, I guess it's definitely um conflicted," said Adam Patiño, a junior at Baylor. "The girl in there is definitely like all for this and I can understand why 'cuz it’s a very touchy subject right now, and I would have to agree, although I'm a little skeptical right now because it's just accusations."
In an ESPN Outside the Lines report released earlier in the day Wednesday, Oakman's name was mentioned in an another alleged case of sexual assault by two different Baylor football players three years ago. Oakman was not the suspect in that instance, but the report says the victim had been drinking at Oakman's apartment before she was assaulted.
Oakman had apparently had a party to celebrate "Diadeloso" in 2013, an annual "day-off" tradition which current Baylor students took part in Tuesday, the day before the report was released, which was also the day of Oakman's arrest.
Oakman graduated from Baylor in December of 2015, but continues to live in Waco as he waits for the NFL Draft.
On Thursday morning, Oakman's bond was set at $25,000. He bonded out around 11:00 a.m.
