KILLEEN, Texas — In three months the new Maude Moore Wood Elementary School will be ready for students and teachers, the Killeen Independent School District said. More than 1000 students across the district will be attending the new school in the 2019-2020 school year. The building will help combat overcrowding in buildings, which the ISD said is a growing problem.
"We are attracting 500 new students a year in Killeen ISD, so as these neighborhoods grow we have to do something about the overcrowding," Killeen ISD Chief Communications Officer Terry Abbott said.
The building will cost the district $25 million and is not part of the bond issue. Over the last several years, money has been set aside from the general fund and transferred into the facilities budget for the new, 125,000 square-foot elementary school.
"We expect to open this next school year at more than 45,500 students which makes us top 25 school districts in the state," Abbott said.
The bond program has a total of 426 million dollars worth of construction projects including multiple schools set to start construction in the coming years.
"You are going to see a lot of building going on in Killeen for the next couple years," Abbott said.
