WACO, Texas — Children from Waco's Transformation Waco Enrichment Camp at JH Hines Elementary School were all smiles as they handpicked books donated through the 6 News Book Drive, on Thursday June 13.
The initiative, a collaboration between Transformation Waco, Literacy ConneXus, and 6 News, aims to foster literacy among local youth during the summer break.
The distribution event, hosted at Pizza Hut, doubled as a pizza party where each child selected six books to take home in personalized HEB book bags.
This second round of distributions hosted on June Friday, June 14, held at Brook Avenue Elementary, was met with equal enthusiasm. Together, 6 News received over 2,000 book donation.
During the event, young readers expressed their gratitude and highlighted the importance of reading in their lives.
Amiya Jade Lewis, a student participant, emphasized, "so your brain can get healthier... and next grade... you can be smarter and smarter... and everybody will be impressed."
Damonte Lewis continued saying, "reading is important to be smart and go to a different grade."
Raya Rollans added, "thank you for the books, it's a good thing to give it to other people."
Throughout the summer, 6 News, Transformation Waco, and Literacy ConneXus plan to continue distributing the donated books.
