WACO, Texas — Waco Independent School District has announced the new principal of University High School.
According to the district, Dr. Qunisha Johnson will take over the position on Monday, Nov. 11, replacing Alonzo McAdoo, who accepted the role of Waco ISD Executive Director of Secondary Education.
Johnson is currently assistant principal at University High, said Waco ISD, and has also served as associate principal at J.H. Hines Elementary and assistant principal at Midway Middle School.
Johnson also reportedly worked 12 years as a school counselor, is certified as an AVID administrator and has her Superintendent certification.
“Dr. Johnson has 17 years of public school education experience, working in multiple school districts,” Waco ISD Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Spicer said. “As an experienced school counselor and campus administrator, Dr. Johnson is committed to meeting the unique needs of all UHS students, will continue to build upon the strong campus culture and will advance the academic and extracurricular successes of the campus.”
As assistant principal, Waco ISD says Johnson focused on working with counselors to "establish systemic processes for accountability and worked on safety and security measures for the campus". She reportedly improved student attendance and worked with teachers and instructional coaches to enhance academic instruction.
“My goal is to do more than oversee support and improvement,” Johnson said in a release. “I will work to raise the rate of positive outcomes for students, create a reputation and demand for excellence in educating the whole child and incorporate the entire community in our success.”
Johnson is a graduate of Tarleton State University with her Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership, said Waco ISD. She graduated from Texas State University with her Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling and the University of Texas with her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology.
