Waco ISD Board of Trustees announces lone finalist for superintendent of schools

Dr. Tiffany Spicer was named as the lone finalist during a special board meeting on Sept. 12.

WACO, Texas — The Waco Independent School District board of trustees has named the lone finalist for the district's new superintendent of schools.

The board of trustees voted unanimously to name Dr. Tiffany Spicer as lone finalist at a special board meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12, the district announced.

According to Waco ISD, Spicer has served more than two decades in education, with 17 of those years in administrative positions. She is currently the superintendent of schools in Buna ISD, and has served districts ranging from 1,500 to 40,000 students, Waco ISD said.

"As a servant leader, I am passionately excited about the opportunity for continuous improvement and providing support to ensure excellence, equity and access for all students in Waco ISD," Spicer said in a release. "I am committed to collaborative leadership with the staff, district, community, board of trustees and other major stakeholders under the umbrella of transparency, cooperation and mutual trust."

The Board must now, by law, wait 21 days before voting to hire Spicer as superintendent. Spicer will take over the position from Dr. Susan Kincannon, who announced her plans to retire in June after having served as superintendent at Waco ISD since 2019, with more than 30 years in public education.

After Kincannon's announcement, the Board of Trustees took action to employ the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services to find a new superintendent, the district said. Four community input sessions were also held. More information on the search can be found at this link.

The Board reportedly received six applicants for initial interviews, with four being invited for second interviews before Spicer was selected.

"Building on our current successes, I'm confident [Spicer] will not only continue those successes, but ensure we continue the upward trajectory," Waco ISD School Board President Stephanie Korteweg said.

The Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote to offer a contract to Spicer on Oct. 4.
