WACO, Texas — As Waco ISD students return to class today, they will experience several significant changes for the new school year.
Superintendent Dr. Susan Kincannon discussed what parents and students need to know, including updates to the district's transportation system and school schedules.
One of the major changes is the start of a three-tier bus system, which Dr. Kincannon says will enhance the district's ability to transport students more efficiently.
"We moved to a three-tier bus system this year," Dr. Kincannon said. "It helps improve our efficiency and our speed in getting students to school."
This shift has resulted in new start and end times across the district. Elementary schools will now run from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., middle schools from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and high schools from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This year also marks the first time in more than three decades that Waco ISD has taken direct control of its bus operations. Dr. Kincannon added that most bus driver positions have been filled, but the district continues to seek additional staff.
"We have pretty much filled most of those vacancies, which is really exciting for us," she said. However, staffing challenges remain across various roles, including teachers, counselors, and administrators.
"Not only to find teachers, but also counselors, assistant principals, principals, and so we've been working very diligently to fill those positions," Dr. Kincannon added.
To ensure that classrooms are staffed, the district may hire some emergency certified teachers or rely on substitutes as needed.
Dr. Kincannon also emphasized the district’s commitment to student safety. "We've incorporated all of the new items into our new facilities that the state has required," she said, the installation of intruder-resistant film on school windows, the addition of metal detectors at certain campuses, and the district-wide requirement for clear backpacks.
Looking ahead, Dr. Kincannon outlined several ongoing construction projects. "We'll be finishing up some more construction projects. The new Waco High School will be finished by this time next year, as well as the new Kendrick Elementary and the renovations and additions at South Waco Elementary," she said.
Meanwhile, Tennyson Middle School, Waco ISD's newest facility, officially opened its doors to students today.
