Waco ISD's Board of Trustees officially hired Dr. A. Marcus Nelson as the District's next Superintendent.
The board voted unanimously Thursday night to approve his five-year employment contract.
Dr. Nelson was the lone finalist for the position, which was announced April 5. He had to wait a state-mandated 21-days before officially being hired.
"I am thankful to the Waco ISD Board of Trustees for the opportunity to be a part of such a special school community in our state," Dr. Nelson said in a statement. "I am elated to serve the students and staff of Waco in this critical and unique roles as Superintendent of Schools, and I look forward to meeting our school community stakeholders in the near future."
Dr. Nelson is the former Superintendent at Laredo ISD, and was named state Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards in 2014.
He will complete his duties in Laredo June 2 and then take over the Waco job the next week. Dr. Nelson replaces Dr. Bonny Cain, who is retiring after having served six years as Waco's Superintendent.
