Texas A&M University deemed 'best' university in Texas in new Wall Street Journal ranking

They looked at whether or not the college was deemed a good investment, looking a graduates' salaries, year to pay off costs and graduation rate impact.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M University was deemed the best college in Texas, according to the Wall Street Journal's new "2025 Best Colleges in the U.S." ranking.

The ranking, which was created alongside College Pulse/Statistica, looked at the top 500 universities in the country. They looked at whether or not the college was deemed a good investment, looking a graduates' salaries, year to pay off costs and graduation rate impact.

New this year in the ranking involved "character score," which is defined as "the extent to which students feel the college has developed character strengths that will help them to make a meaningful contribution to society, including moral courage, hopefulness, resilience, wisdom and a sense of justice."

Texas A&M University ranked No. 28 out of 500 overall, No. 11 among the nation's public universities and No. 1 in the Lone Star State. 

Below are the top 5 colleges in Texas, according to the list:

  1. Texas A&M with overall score of 82.6
  2. Rice University (82.4)
  3. University of Texas at Austin (81.1)
  4. University of St. Thomas (66.2)
  5. Trinity University (66.1)

Baylor University ranked No. 21 in the state of Texas. Overall, it ranked 340 out of 500 with a score of 54.8. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is No. 26 in Texas and 401 overall 48.3.

  2. Babson College (91.9)
  3. Stanford University (91.6)
  4. Yale University (89.3)
  5. Claremont McKenna College (89.2)
