Texas A&M student creates 'Spare Hand Students' app

The service that started in College Station is now in Waco and Lubbock.

WACO, Texas — There's an app for just about everything but Texas A&M Aggie and Southlake native Zach Miller found out there actually wasn't one for this.

"My mom was like, hey, who wants to go clean the house today? And my dad and I look at each other and we go, well, not me. I was like, why isn't there an app out there where we could just go on our phone and we could just access to a bunch of people who are willing to come over and clean our house," said Miller.

The idea quickly became a father-son project.

"Then my dad was like, why don't we make it strictly for college students? It's hard enough for us college students to get jobs and it's hard enough for the homeowners to get affordable and convenient help all while kind of bringing the whole community together," Miller said. "So that's how "Spare Hand Students" was born and we kind of started spinning one idea after another. And then now we are where we are today."

Spare Hand Students launched in Bryan-College Station connecting Aggie and Blinn College students to tasks. Then, it expanded to Lubbock where Texas Tech Raiders started signing up.

Waco is now the third location and includes Baylor, MCC and TSTC students.

"It's been amazing on both sides. Starting with the customers. They just absolutely love how they get to support the local community, support students in need," Miller said. "Whether they have to pay for their own way [through college], whether they have to just pay for gas and books or whatever it may be."

Spare Hand Students just crossed the 1500 job milestone with 3500 customers signed up and 1500 students ready to work. Miller has plans for more expansion.

"I know that Aggies probably won't want to hear this, but I know that we're thinking about going to Austin next. The reason for that is, it's just a huge town and there's all kind of different schools there. Five or 10 different campuses around," Miller said. "So we're like, you know there's a big community up there that could really leverage this and get the help...I think that might be next on our list."

Spare Hand Students is available for download on Apple and Android phones.
