KILLEEN, Texas — Temple College and Goodwill are partnering to offer a new service for the Central Texas community.
Beginning in spring 2025, limited Temple College Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) services will be offered at the Heart of Texas (HoT) Goodwill of Killeen, serving students from Killeen, Harker Heights, Belton, Temple and more.
According to a release from the college, the AEL program provides services such as:
- High School Equivalency (HSE) instruction to prepare students to pass their GED exam
- English as a Second Language (ESL) program designed to provide English language learners the skills to attain or improve employability and quality of life
- Citizenship program to prepare newcomers to the U.S. for the citizenship exam
- Career Pathways program that offers qualified members of the Central Texas community paid scholarships for certifications in in-demand occupations like Certified Medical Assistants, Residential Electricians, Patient Care Technicians and more.
The programs will reportedly offer flexible scheduling options, including morning and evening classes, in order to accommodate learner's schedules. Classes are delivered by experienced instructors "dedicated to fostering a supportive learning environment," said Temple College.
Classes are free of charge, with books and materials provided, said TC. Classes will meet during daytime and evening hours both in person and online over Zoom. TC said instructors will work with students to "identify and plan their individual learning goals and provide encouragement throughout the program."
The program will also reportedly offer personalized support services, including academic advising, tutoring and career counseling, meant to help students prepare for their future, either by furthering their education or entering the workforce.
"By equipping adult learners with essential resources and support, we empower them to make meaningful strides toward their personal and professional aspirations while aligning with the local workforce board's plan to strengthen our community’s workforce," said James Skinner, Temple College’s AEL Director.
Enrollment at the HoT Goodwill location will initially be limited to multi-level combined HSE & ESL programs in the spring, said TC, but can be "easily expanded" based on demand. Full services also continue to be offered on the Temple College campus and over Zoom, according to the college.
Those interested may apply on the Temple College website at this link and select the program they want to attend, HSE, ESL or CP. An enrollment fair will also be held from 8 a.m.-noon on Nov. 22 at the HoT Goodwill, located at 4004 E. Stan Schlueter Loop, Killeen, Texas 76542.
