US Economic Development Administration awards Rockdale ISD with $5.25 million grant

The multi-million-dollar grant will go towards renovating the College & Career Academy.

ROCKDALE, Texas — The Rockdale Independent School District has been awarded a multi-million-dollar grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to renovate the College & Career Academy.

The renovations will allow the College & Career Academy, which was once a hospital, to be the location for upper-level health science, manufacturing, and technology classes. Dual-credit courses will also be provided to high school students, which allow them to get a head start on their college degrees by earning credits even before they have graduated.

"We are thrilled to receive this substantial grant from the Economic Development Administration," said Dr. Denise Monzingo, Superintendent of Rockdale ISD. "This funding allows us to take the first crucial steps towards transforming our College & Career Academy into a cutting-edge educational facility that will equip our students and community with the skills and knowledge needed for success in the 21st century workforce."

Rockdale ISD was one of two school districts in Texas that received a portion of a nearly $7 million investment from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The other portion of the grant was given to the Port Isabel San Benito Navigation District, located near the Texas-Mexico border in the southern part of the state.

"Texas remains the Best State for Business thanks to our diverse and highly skilled workforce,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “These grants in Rockdale and Port Isabel will help make critical improvements to our infrastructure, creating over a thousand good-paying jobs, bolstering economic development in Central and South Texas, and equipping young Texans with the skills they need to thrive in high-demand industries. I thank the Economic Development Administration for this investment that will lead to more economic growth as we work to build a bigger, better Texas.”
