Texas Representative Brad Buckley announces plans to file legislation to 'enhance educational outcomes and safety in Texas schools'

A release from Buckley's office states the announcement is meant to "emphasize the urgent need for reform in school discipline practices".

SALADO, Texas — Texas Representative Brad Buckley has announced plans to file legislation to protect teachers in Texas classrooms, Buckley's office announced on Oct. 16.

A release from Buckley's office states the legislation is a move to "enhance educational outcomes and safety in Texas schools" and "emphasizes the urgent need for reform in school discipline practices".

"Every student deserves a fair chance to succeed, educators deserve a safe and professional work environment and children with behavioral issues deserve a system that appropriately addresses those issues," stated the release.

“Nearly every Texas educator I have spoken with raises student discipline as the most important thing we as lawmakers in Austin could reform to help our schools run better and safer as well as increase educational attainment in the classroom,” said Buckley in a statement.

Paige Williams of Texas Classroom Teachers Association was also quoted in the statement.

“Our members tell us that providing a safe and productive learning environment is the top concern during the school year,” Williams said. “Many teachers fear not only for their own safety but for the safety of their students as well, and without a stable classroom environment it is virtually impossible to help students reach their academic goals and see their school as a safe and nurturing place to be. Teachers must have tools at their disposal to help accomplish this, and we are grateful to Chairman Buckley for his leadership on this issue.”

“I am working with educators and advocates along with other stakeholders on legislation aimed at reforming school discipline practices across Texas," Buckley continued. "Our goal is to create a more effective system that promotes a positive learning environment for all students and teachers."

The specifics of the legislation have not been announced at this time. Buckley is asking for educators, parents and those in the community to share their insights and experiences regarding school discipline in Texas.
