WOODWAY, Texas — A Midway ISD student is making history this semester, quite literally.
Carter Rivera, a 5th grader at Woodway Elementary School, is set to compete at the Texas History Day state history fair in Austin on Saturday, April 20, announced Midway Independent School District.
Rivera earned his place in the state contest by placing second in the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair in February.
According to Midway ISD, Rivera is competing in the elementary individual poster category with a project titled "Waco News Correspondent Contributes to the Cause in World War I".
The theme of the 2024 contest is "Turning Points in History", and will be held at the Bullock Texas State History Museum at the University of Texas. Winners of the competition will advance to the National History Day competition, which will be held over the summer.
More information on the contest can be found at this link.
Shanna Attai, Rivera's teacher and history fair sponsor, said he expressed interest in the competition all on his own.
“Carter is very motivated,” Attai said. “I am consistently impressed by his drive for knowledge and appreciation for our history. He is an exemplary student!”
Midway ISD said Rivera will compete against first and second-place winners from regions across Texas.
