LORENA, Texas — Residents of Lorena, TX will have a new issue on the ballot this May, a bond proposal from Lorena Independent School District.
On Monday, Feb. 19, Lorena ISD announced that the school board had approved a $38.9 million bond issue, and will seek voter approval. The district said the bond was the result of a community effort over several months by a Bond Facility Planning Committee made up of citizens, city leaders, board members, teachers and parents.
The Committee spent several months collecting data, evaluating and planning to put the bond package together, said the district.
The plan reportedly includes district-wide additions and renovations, according to Lorena ISD.
Below are the items the district has stated will be on the bond referendum for citizens to vote on:
Proposition A
- Elementary School additions and renovations
- Additional space for 220 students (800 students total)
- Grades 2-5
- Middle School locker room additions/renovations
- High School restroom ADA upgrades
- Dressing rooms at the PAC
- Band Hall Expansion
Proposition B
- High School Sports Medicine
Lorena ISD's financial advisor has determined that there would be a school tax rate impact to finance the bond, said the district, which would include an increase to the district's I&S tax rate of 20.7 cents per $100 valuation.
Lorena ISD said it is important for residents to have their voices heard during the election, and are asking citizens to remind their friends, neighbors and relatives to get involved and ask questions.
Lorena ISD said residents will have the opportunity to vote on the bond referendum beginning with early voting on April 22-30 and on Election Day on May 4, 2024.
