KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees took proactive measures during their regular meeting on Tuesday, March 5, to tackle the nationwide challenge of a shortage of certified educators.
With fewer candidates graduating from colleges and universities, the district is paving the way to ensure a steady supply of qualified teachers.
In a unanimous decision, the Trustees approved an amendment to the District of Innovation Plan, allowing administrators to start a program that will help current employees become certified teachers.
“Our Board demonstrated their forward-thinking mentality with this decision," Superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Fey said. “By implementing the KISD Teach program, we aim to cultivate a more diverse and equitable pool of educators."
The innovative KISD Teach program will establish a collaborative partnership between the district, Teachworthy – an alternative Texas teacher certification provider – and Indiana Wesleyan University. Selected employees will continue their roles as teachers while pursuing a bachelor’s degree and teacher certification. The program, is set to start in the 2024-2025 school year, with 30 participants.
In addition to addressing the educator shortage, the Board approved significant infrastructure projects. Trumble Construction Company secured the top ranking for the roofing life-cycle replacement project at Early College High School.
Furthering their commitment to facility improvements, Trustees approved the collaboration with PBK Architects, Inc., and Langerman Foster Engineering Company, LLC, for the tennis court replacement project at Ellison High School.
