WACO, Texas — The Waco Independent School Distrit held a dedication Tuesday for their newest school, celebrating one of the community's most iconic campuses, G.W. Carver Middle School.
G.W. Carver Middle School was opened in 1956 for Black students in Waco until public schools were integrated in 1970.
The original school burned down in 2021, but the district worked to rebuild a new campus in honor of the historic school, with the help of a historical committee that helped to install artwork and memorabilia in the new building.
Alumni from the historic school, community members, district and campus staff and students all came out to the ceremony to watch the dedication of the new school.
Waco ISD said G.W. Carver Middle School, which reopened its doors in August 2023, will be the first of the new state-of-the-art campuses the district will open.
