China Spring ISD awarded $1 million federal grant to improve security

The $1 million grant will fund violence prevention, crisis response training, firearm safety education and improved data collection and technology.

CHINA SPRING, Texas — U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) announced today that China Spring ISD will receive a $1 million federal grant to enhance security and crisis intervention programs. The funding, authorized by Cornyn’s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, will support a range of initiatives aimed at preventing violence and improving crisis response in the district.

The grant will be used to fund violence prevention and crisis response training for law enforcement and school resource officers, firearm safety training for community members and the development of data collection designed to reduce violence in schools. A portion of the funding comes from the U.S. Department of Justice’s STOP School Violence Program.

Cornyn said the grant is a direct result of efforts to improve school safety following the 2022 Uvalde shooting, which deeply impacted the state.

"The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is about mental health, school safety and ensuring that the tragedy that struck Uvalde was not in vain," Cornyn said in a statement. "I’m grateful this law is giving schools across our state the resources needed to keep students, staff, and teachers safe."

The funding aims to address critical gaps in school safety and help communities like China Spring better prepare for potential threats.
