LITTLE RIVER-ACADEMY, Texas — Academy High School's Health Science program has been awarded a grant given to only 35 recipients across the Lone Star State.
Announced on Thursday, Dec. 12, the district earned a $325,786 grant from Jobs and Education for Texans (JET), which will allow the district to equip Academy High School's health science program with new equipment to give students looking for a career in the medical field more hands-on experience with technologies that even rival some college-level programs.
"The addition of this equipment will revolutionize how our students learn," said Academy High School Health Science teacher Jennifer Chaffin in an announcement from the district. "Being able to use an Anatomage table and high-fidelity patient simulators in high school is a game-changer. It sets our students apart and gives them an incredible head start in their future careers."
The over $300,000 grant will be used to purchase the aforementioned Anatomage table, as well as a bariatric nursing manikin, blood pressure simulator, microscopes, a mobile charting workstation, and two SUSIE S2400 patient simulators, according to Academy ISD.
"This grant opens doors for our program. The opportunity to use this level of equipment will inspire our students to dream bigger and work harder," said Health Science teacher Alyssa Williams. "They're gaining access to resources that many college programs don't even have."
"This award demonstrates the strength of our programs and the dedication of our staff," said Superintendent Darla Nolen in the release. "Academy ISD is committed to fostering opportunities that prepare students for bright futures, and this grant is a shining example of that mission."
According to the district, a check presentation for the grant will occur in early 2025.
