Woodway Public Safety Department warning of email scam

Scammers are reportedly threatening to leak victim's internet history or videos from their computer cameras unless they send Bitcoin.

WOODWAY, Texas — The Woodway Public Safety Department (PSD) is warning residents of an email scam that is reportedly circulating.

According to Woodway PSD, a resident recently received an email claiming that the sender had been following the person's internet search history and watching them on their computer camera.

The sender of the email reportedly mentioned the victim's home address and "identifying factors" to try and intimidate the victim, threatening to release the person's browser history and other information if they did not send Bitcoin to a specific Bitcoin address.

Woodway PSD said this is a scam and there is no indication at this time that the emails are a legitimate threat, but they are investigating and understand it can be a "very unnerving email to receive".

Our Verify team has also verified that this scam is not a credible threat. More information can be found at this link.
