WACO, Texas — A man has been sentenced to life in prison in McLennan County after a jury convicted him of assaulting his girlfriend with a deadly weapon in 2021.

The McLennan County District Attorney's Office stated that 38-year-old Robert Lujan was convicted of aggravated assault on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

According to the District Attorney's Office, the charge against Lujan stemmed from an incident that took place on Nov. 17, 2021, when Lujan "severely beat, pistol whipped and bit" his girlfriend, after accusing her of cheating on him. Lujan also allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend and fired a gun near her head.

The District Attorney's Office said Lujan and his girlfriend went to the girlfriend's mother's house after the assault, where Lujan reportedly said he had caused his girlfriend's injuries and threatened to kill her again.

The girlfriend's family reportedly called 911, and emergency services transported her to Hillcrest Hospital, where medical staff found that she had suffered "serious injuries including rib fractures, a fractured eye socket and numerous other cuts and bruises".

Waco Police investigated the case, according to the District Attorney's Office, and found the vehicle in which part of the assault took place. Officers reportedly found physical evidence to corroborate the report Lujan's girlfriend had made, including a bullet hole in the passenger door of the car.

The jury reportedly convicted Lujan after about 30 minutes of deliberation. The District Attorney's Office said Lujan must serve 30 years before he becomes eligible for parole.

"Like many domestic violence abusers, Lujan wrongly believed his control over his victim would protect him from accountability. This victim, and our community, are safer today because this violent abuser was sentenced to life," said a statement from Assistant District Attorneys Will Hix and Alyssa Killin, who prosecuted the case.
