Waco chief reports 5-year crime decrease during city council meeting

From 2018 to 2023, the crime rate has gone from 2,650 to 2,283 for violent crimes. For non violent crimes it has decreased from 18,080 to 16,239.

WACO, Texas — Chief Sheryl Victorian delivered a positive update on the City of Waco's crime trends during a City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

During the meeting she highlighted a significant decrease in both violent and non-violent crimes over the past five years.

From 2018 to 2023, the crime rate has gone from 2,650 to 2,283 for violent crimes. For non-violent crimes it has decreased from 18,080 to 16,239.

"This is great news to hear and also serves as a reminder that we cannot stop the work we are all doing," stated Chief Victorian. "As you can see, people are still victimized each day."

According to the City of Waco website, Sheryl Victorian is a native Texan and a 28-year law enforcement professional. She was sworn in as the City of Waco’s Chief of Police on March 15, 2021, after serving with the Houston Police Department for 28 years.

During her two years as the City of Waco’s Chief of Police, she empathized the importance of partnerships between the police department and residents in maintaining the safety of the city.

"The safety of our city is dependent on the partnerships between the Police, Residents, and Community Stakeholders," Chief Victorian said. "We are better together!"
