'I want him to be held accountable' | Two Temple families seeking justice after two teens hit and killed by motorcycle

Best friends 15-year-old Jaelanni Baity and 14-year-old Nyree Jones were hit and killed by a motorcycle on May 26.

TEMPLE, Texas — It's been a difficult two months for the families of 15-year-old Jaelanni Baity and 14-year-old Nyree Jones. The two teens were struck and killed by a motorcyclist on May 26, 2024.

According to an affidavit, several officers from the Temple Police Department responded to a vehicle accident at the intersection of West Adams Ave and Westfield Blvd in Temple.

In a prior interview, the mothers of the victims, Nicole Baity and Genae Jones, spoke to 6 News about what happened that night.

"We were all just hanging out," Baity explained.

"Later on the kids wanted to stay at my house," Jones added. "Later on that night, they decided they wanted to get some snacks. They didn't go out that late alone. They were with three other people who were over the age of 18."

The Temple Police Department affidavit reports that Jaiveon Campbell, who had been walking with Jones and Baity, stated that as they were crossing the road, he heard a motorcycle coming. Then he saw Jones and Baity be struck by the motorcycle.

Campbell stated that Jones and Baity were in the left lane of the westbound lanes when they were struck.

At that time, the area where the incident occurred was still being affected by the recent tornado that destroyed property and infrastructure, and the intersection did not have working stop lights or illumination lights on the roadway, according to the affidavit.

Police identified the motorcyclist as 18-year-old Logan Mayberry. The affidavit says that officer Paul Ramirez stated that Mayberry purchased the motorcycle involved in the crash two months prior to the incident.

"I want him to be accountable for it, that's what I want," Baity told 6 News. "I want him to be accountable and don't hide from it."

A Coryell County detective told Temple Police that Mayberry turned himself in to the Coryell County Jail and was charged on two counts of criminally negligent homicide. He was then bailed out 24 hours later.

Baity told 6 News Mayberry has yet to contact the families of the girls with an apology or condolences for what happened.

"I was infuriated that he's walking around and living his life and being able to go to places he wants to do and my daughter isn't able to do that,' Baity said.

Baity added that the investigation has taken longer than she expected but she has learned to trust law enforcement and has faith that justice will be served.

Nyree Jones's mother, Genae Jones, declined an interview as she is still mourning.

Temple Police told 6 News Mayberry's case will go to a grand jury. There is no official word on when that will be.
