Trial of Caysen Allison delayed to January 2025

Caysen Allison is accused of stabbing and killing 18-year-old Joe Ramirez at Belton High School in 2022.

BELTON, Texas — The trial of Caysen Allison has been delayed to January 2025, according to Bell County court documents.

Allison is accused of stabbing and killing 18-year-old Joe Ramirez, a fellow student, in a bathroom at Belton High School in 2022. He has been charged with murder.

Allison's trial was scheduled to begin on May 20, 2024, according to documents, but was later delayed at a hearing on Wednesday, May 8.

On June 5, 2024, the trial was delayed again. At the May 8 hearing, attorneys had discussed the existence of Chromebooks that were not previously logged, and the defense asked for more time to download and review potential evidence, said court documents.

At the June 6 hearing, court documents said consent had been given to search most laptops, with an anticipated request to search one laptop. Allison's defense attorney Zachary Boyd reportedly stated he is in the process of copying hard drives and anticipates a minimum of 72 hours before he can ship to experts.

Court documents show that, after "consulting calendars and conflicts for both sides", a new trial date has been set for January 13, 2025.

On May 3, 2022, the Belton Police Department was reportedly called out to Belton High School. When officers arrived, they learned Ramirez was stabbed after he reportedly got into a fight with Allison in a bathroom, police said. Ramirez was taken to the hospital in Temple where he later died from his injuries. An arrest affidavit said Ramirez was stabbed in the chest, back, legs and arm.

Allison, then 18, reportedly fled the school following the stabbing, but officers were able to locate him at his home and arrested him. Police said Allison admitted to the stabbing and that they found a folding knife at his home, which appeared to be covered in blood, according to the affidavit.

Allison was charged with Ramirez's murder. His initial bond was set to $1 million, but it was later reduced to $175,000. He also faced a separate assault charge against a family member, which was an additional $15,000 bond.

Allison is reportedly currently out on bond.
