LAMPASAS, Texas — Police have confirmed three deaths following a standoff between a suspect and authorities in Lampasas that took place on Thursday, July 25.
That morning, police were sent to 901 W. Ave. A at around 12:45 p.m. regarding someone trespassing on private property. The homeowner told police that an unknown male was in their yard and refused to leave. Shortly after, officers made contact with the man who was cooperative and agreed to leave. He was issued a criminal trespass warning at the homeowner's request, according to police.
At 2 p.m., the Lampasas Police Department was sent back to the same address after a report of numerous gunshots being heard in the area. Police noticed a side door that had been visibly forced open and they went inside to conduct a welfare check. The officers found two dead women inside, a 50-year-old and an 82-year-old, police said.
Police identified the victims in an update on Monday, July 29 as Tobi King, 50, and Elaine Owens, 82. The suspect was also identified as Charles Dougherty, 56.
After additional officers arrived, more gunshots were heard in the immediate area, which police were able to confirm were coming from 203 N. Arnold St. Authorities then worked together to create a perimeter around the home.
Law enforcement believed that Dougherty was inside the home and had barricaded himself inside. After a hostage negotiator attempted to contact the man proved unsuccessful, police say officers forced their way into the home where he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Lampasas Police and the Texas Rangers said that the man had no known prior contact with the two female victims.
