MEXIA, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Rangers have identified the man who died after allegedly barricading himself in a home in Mexia on Sept. 12.
The Texas Rangers said they are conducting a death investigation into the death of 57-year-old Alan Vest of Mexia.
On Sept. 12, residents living along S. Lena Street and E. Evergreen Street told 6 News a man barricaded himself inside a home while the U.S. Marshals Service tried serving a federal warrant, causing a heavy police presence including SWAT teams. The Limestone County Sheriff's Office confirmed that its own deputies, Texas DPS and the McLennan County Sheriff's Office were on scene and assisted the Marshals Service.
The Mexia Police Department stated it was contacted to provide marked patrol units for a visible, local police presence during the situation. Mexia Fire and EMS were also reportedly on the scene.
6 News reporter Sydney Dishon said she heard multiple gunshots and flashbangs go off during the course of the afternoon.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service told 6 News that a SWAT team confronted the suspect, now identified as Vest, on the porch of the home before he ran back inside and barricaded himself in.
Authorities attempted to negotiate with Vest for hours, said the U.S. Marshals Office.
Eventually, authorities were able to enter the home, where they found Vest dead of what they believe at this time to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said the Marshals Service.
Mexia PD said negotiations "concluded" around 6 p.m.
