TEMPLE, Texas — A naked man was injured after Temple Police officers used a Taser on him during a welfare check on Wednesday, August 7, according to Temple Police Department.
According to police, at around 8:10 p.m., officers were called to the 3600 block of S. General Bruce Dr., in response to a welfare check.
TPD said there were multiple calls of a naked man walking in traffic, screaming, and acting erratically. Callers reported that the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was attempting to jump off a bridge.
At around 8:18 p.m. the call was upgraded to a potential jumper, TPD said.
Upon arrival, they found the man standing in the middle of traffic. The man refused to obey commands to move away from the interstate and instead began moving closer to the highway. The man jumps a guard rail and officers continue to try and get the subject away from the interstate. Believing the man was going to kill himself, an officer tased him, causing the man to fall from the side of the interstate onto the roadway below.
According to TPD, the man was no longer on the bridge or the overpass.
The man, who was alert when emergency medical personnel responded, was taken to the hospital with broken ribs and a leg abrasion. He later admitted to using PCP, TPD said.
The man faces potential charges of evading on foot. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, TPD said.
TPD is still investigating the incident. No further information is being released at this time.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Temple Police Department at 254-298-5500.
