Pedestrian dies after Sunday morning crash in Killeen

The pedestrian was crossing in a poorly lit area and wearing dark-colored clothing, police say.

KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen Police Department announced Monday the death of the pedestrian involved in the early morning crash on Sunday, Aug. 18.

Police say 20-year-old Rontario Simmons was crossing the 3300 block of S. Fort Hood Road at 4:15 a.m. when a black Chevrolet SUV, traveling north on S Fort Hood Road, entered the left turn lane in preparation to turn onto W Elms Road and struck the pedestrian.

When police arrived, they found him in the roadway suffering from severe injuries. He was airlifted to Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple in critical condition, but he later died at 4:50 p.m., according to police. 

Simmons was crossing in a poorly lit area and wearing dark-colored clothing, police say.

There were no other injuries and KPD is still investigating the crash.
